Your Shipment Density
0 lbs/ft³
Estimated Freight Class: 50
Note: This is an estimate. Actual freight class may vary based on other factors.
Understanding Freight Density
Freight density is calculated by dividing the weight of your shipment by its volume. This measurement helps carriers determine how efficiently they can pack their vehicles, which impacts shipping costs.
How to Calculate Density
Follow these steps to calculate your freight's density:
- Measure the length, width, and height of your shipment in inches
- Multiply these measurements to get the cubic inches
- Divide by 1,728 to convert to cubic feet
- Divide the weight (in pounds) by the cubic feet
The formula is:
Density = Weight (lbs) ÷ [Length (in) × Width (in) × Height (in) ÷ 1,728]
Freight Class Based on Density
Freight class is one of the key factors that determine LTL shipping rates. The National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) has established 18 freight classes, from 50 to 500, based primarily on density.
Freight Class | Density (lbs/ft³) | Examples |
---|---|---|
50 | 50+ lbs/ft³ | Steel, brick, cement |
55 | 35-50 lbs/ft³ | Hardware, books, bricks |
